As LASIK surgery was helping many with poor vision, it was only a matter of time before professional athletes would take notice. Many have taken the step, and have had LASIK eye surgery. The difference for them is the risk level is so high.

People are afraid of the consequences of this type of procedure going bad. As with any surgical procedure, the risks are there. Still many athletes have now had LASIK surgery preformed on their eyes. Let’s see how it went.

Tiger Woods might be the biggest athlete in today’s world of megastars. He had the operation in 1999. His eyes now see at 20-15, better than normal (20-20).

Baseball is one of the sports where your vision is hyper important. Seeing the ball coming at 100 mph and hitting it with a bat is quite a vision related challenge. Many baseball players have now had LASIK surgeries, hoping to see that ball better.

Even a couple of pitchers have had LASIK. Greg Maddox had the procedure done and then went on a huge winning streak. He sees at 20-15 now.

Maddox denies that the surgery had anything to do with his win streak. HE did the surgery for off field reasons. He never thought it would make much difference on the mound.

The list of hitters that had the procedure includes Jeff Bagwell and Bernie Williams, both perennial all-stars. Because they have great lifetime statistics it’s hard to see big changes there.

It’s when you talk to these guys that you see how happy they are with the change. Maddox say simple joys like watching TV are much more enjoyable now. Bernie Williams says it’s nothing short of miraculous.

For Tiger there were a couple of helpful issues. He can have allergy problems. Wearing contacts with an allergy can make playing difficult.

Tiger felt everything was bigger, clearer, and closer than before the surgery. He feels this benefits him most in reading long putts. He sees the slopes in the greens in more detail, allowing him to see the line better.

One thing is for sure. If these great athletes feel it’s safe enough to risk losing millions of dollars, then we should all feel safe. Millions of people have had successful LASIK surgery.
