There are loads of language self study courses available now. Some are quite costly and some seem to be fairly priced but ultimately the product is judged on how well it taught you to speak Spanish. Is it possible to learn Spanish from just a CD or MP3 ? This article will discuss this topic giving the pros and cons of using an audio self study courses to learn Spanish.

A definite advantage of an audio course is that it is a good simulation of the method we used to learn our native language. As a baby you learn your native language by listening and eventually repeating what you hear. This is the same method that is used with a Spanish CD or MP3. The words and phrases are listened to and repeated. There is a dialog that you take part in much like the dialog a baby has with it’s mother.

This is in sharp contrast to more traditional methods that require students to learn reading, writing and grammar at the same time. This is not an intuitive model as most kids learn these skills after they are fluent speakers. This teaching method works for some people but many get overwhelmed by the huge amount of knowledge and learning they have to take in and simply lose interest.

Another advantage of an audio course is that it teaches you correct pronunciation (provided the audio is by a native Spanish speaker). This is important for a student of a new language because practicing your skills is the best way to improve those skills. However, if you can’t pronounce words people will not understand you. This is in contrast to not getting the grammar right. People will understand what you mean even though the grammar is wrong. speaking to people not only improves your skills but gives you confidence, and this is important if you want to get fluent in the language.

And finally, a learn Spanish CD or MP3 is very easy to use. Provided you have a CD or MP3 player you could pretty much study Spanish anywhere. The most obvious place is the car. Many people spend hours of each day commuting to and from work. Wasted time which can be put to good use learning Spanish.

This is largely true. However I would say that when you are first listening to the audio you need to focus all your attention on the course and what is being said. Thus I don’t think you could use it in the car or at the gym initially.

If you have listened to the audios half a dozen times then it gets easier to multi task but initially I would say it is a no no.

So can you learn to speak Spanish with a CD or MP3 course ? I think they are really useful in teaching you the language. They will not make you fluent but they will give you some skills that can help you get to that kind of level. They break the learning process down into more sizable chunks. They concentrate on getting 2 core skills right rather than hitting you with five areas of learning. They also give you some confidence to speak to native Spanish speaking people. To me this is where the real learning comes from and having this confidence is essential.

If you live in North America there are obvious advantages to learning to speak Spanish. In the United States there are large communities of Spanish speaking people. In many of these communities everyday dealings and business is done in Spanish. So to be a constructive part of these communities a basic grasp of Spanish would be help. And many of the surrounding countries speak Spanish as their native language.

In Europe, speaking Spanish is useful for tourists and many people that choose to retire to Spain each year. It goes without saying that your experience will be immeasurably improved if you can communicate with the locals.

So if you are planning to learn Spanish, you probably want to learn it as quickly as possible. Don’t we all. Everybody hates having to learn the word for apple or how to conjugate the verb to sing. We want to be able to talk to people and have a meaningful conversation.

Learning grammar and vocabulary has to be the most boring thing to do when learning a new language. It is a rote method of learning that is time consuming and pretty dull after a while.

Learning grammar and vocabulary with these methods is opposite to how we gained our native tongues. We learned them through repetition and primarily an honest desire to use the language.

This is obvious when you see a young child or baby learning their native language. The child hears his mother speaking words. Eventually he gets the meaning of the words. He soon wants to take part in the conversation. He has the desire to take part.

At the start his grunts and mumbles may be unintelligible but eventually he will be able to say a few words. He will continue to hone these speaking skills by watching a listening to people around him.

When he gets to the stage where he is forming simple sentences then it is safe to say he understands all the basic building blocks to learning a language. From this point his ability to speak will increase at a rapid rate.

He will learn new words and start using them in his speaking. He will get positive responses from the people he talks to. This will spur him on and he will want to learn more about the language. At this point he will listen to songs and maybe watch cartoons on TV. He will listen to his parents and grandparents. All the time he will be integrating this learning into his grasp of the language. He will never stop learning new things about the language.

This method is replicated when learning a new language by immersing oneself in the language. Immersion learning typically involves going to a country where the language you desire to learn is spoken.

This may sound scary at first. You are going to a country where you don’t speak the language, although you will probably have some simple words and understanding of the language. You will be doing a course in the country and learning the language as a child might learn his language.

You are exposed to the language all the time. In order to communicate you have to speak it. In order to speak it you have to have the desire. And believe me, if you are living in a country where you don’t have the language you have the desire.

All the barriers, like looking stupid or not knowing how to say something, drop away when you know that you have to speak to communicate. You understand the reason for learning a word or a sentence. It jumps out of a textbook and has a real application.

Learning a new language is never easy however the desire to communicate will help you through the tough times. If you take a course in the Spanish speaking country then you will also have some support in your desire to learn.

So I feel the best way to learn Spanish is to go to a Spanish speaking country. Take a course and then spend a bit of time there. this will really give you an opportunity to consolidate you skills and take them on further.

Learning a foreign language is not an easy task but, after years of struggling and frustration, I believe I’ve found the most effective way to do it. I can now speak Italian to quite an advanced level and I’d like to offer you a few suggestions as to how to give yourself the best chance of success.

The main thing is that you really need a teacher. While teach-yourself materials can be useful as back-up, they are no substitute for someone to talk and listen to you, to correct your mistakes and to explain why you should say it this way and not that. I spent a couple of years with a book and CDs but I didn’t get to grips with the language until I enrolled on a course (or rather, the right course).

When you are studying maths or history, you can learn a great deal from just listening to a lecture. This doesn’t work with language: you need to be speaking. For this reason, it’s really important that your class is very small – ideally, just you!

My first experience of Italian lessons was an evening class at my local college. This was much better than studying alone but there were 15 of us, so we each got very little individual attention. I enjoyed the lessons but I didn’t learn a great deal.

When I discovered a language school that specialises in one-to-one courses, I decided to give it a go – and I’m so glad I did! In just over a year, I’ve reached a level I never dreamed I would. The course goes at my speed and we talk about things I’m interested in, not just whatever is in the next chapter of the book.

Apart from the fact that it’s the most efficient way to learn, a one-to-one course is also much more convenient because you can arrange the lessons for times that suit you. With my childcare and work commitments, I really like this flexibility.

When I’d mastered the basics and was equipped to cope, we started doing the entire lesson in Italian, which I really like. It’s not just an academic exercise any more; I’m using the language to communicate with my teacher. This forces me to be resourceful and I get a huge buzz from making myself understood and from understanding what she says to me.

The best way to learn Italian, then, is to have one-to-one lessons with a native speaker who is also an experienced teacher. Stop struggling by yourself, don’t bother with a big class. You and the right teacher, that’s the way forward. I’ve surprised myself by making such quick progress and you might too!

Have you noticed how language courses these days are so concerned with speed and avoiding ‘the boring bits’ that the knowledge they offer you is usually sketchy at best? As someone who actually likes grammar, I find that frustrating – and slightly insulting. However, I’m happy to say I have finally found a course that suits me.

My 1980s schooling gave me a good grasp of French. The verb tables that I learnt off by heart, agreement of adjectives, the various ways to form a question I have forgotten none of these things, because they were clearly explained and made sense.

While I am not suggesting that language-teaching methods were perfect in those days, I do believe they were more effective than what is generally on offer today. My major criticism of the way I learnt at school is that the emphasis was so heavily on writing and reading. It’s great to be able to do both of those things in a foreign language but it’s even more useful, particularly at the beginning, to be able to speak and to understand what someone says back.

The strength of modern methods is the concentration on speaking and listening. The weakness is the sloppy attitude to grammar. Yes, making yourself understood is what matters but if you don’t learn the correct forms in the early stages, it will be almost impossible for you to speak the language smoothly later on.

It is a manifestation of the current culture, craving instant gratification, that so many language courses offer Italian in a Week – or even a day! Learning a language is a considerable undertaking and it’s simply not realistic to pretend it can be done in less than a few months. If your idea of ’speaking’ Italian is being able to say “buongiorno”, “grazie,” and “gelato”, then OK, you can achieve this in a day. However, if what you mean is being able to hold a conversation, even if only about what you did yesterday and what you like about Italy, then you need to settle down and study properly.

To learn Italian well, you have to be dedicated. It’s not very exciting at the outset, memorising verb endings, sorting out nouns and adjectives, getting your mind around the different words for “you”. But the investment you make in doing this will pay enormous dividends when you reach the next level.

After the first few weeks, it all gets more interesting but it’s really no good trying to skip that initial phase. If your Italian has not got firm foundations, it will be shaky for ever. However, if you put in the effort at the beginning, you will develop into an accurate, confident speaker of this beautiful language.

Teaching materials, then, should provide clear explanations of how the language works, as well as lots of practice exercises, so we can check we have understood as we go along.

I highly recommend Italian for Beginners, an ebook written by a language school in Manchester. I bought it 3 or 4 months ago and have now just finished working through it. I’ve still got some way to go before I can discuss politics in Italian, of course, but I feel very secure about what I’ve learnt and I know I’ve got a solid base on which to build further. Sono molto felice!

As a culture, we often depict the lives of American Indians when they lived free on the land in movies and television. Have you ever noticed in those movies, when the Indian communicates, there seems to be a heavy emphasis on hand signals and sign language? And as the story unfolds, the “Indian guide” or the hero of the story who makes peace between the two peoples often does so using signs and body gestures which he then has to interpret for the audience.

Of course now that we are trying to be more culturally sensitive, we recognize that old time western movies got it wrong a lot about Native American life as it really was. In this effort not to use such stereotypes, its easy also to think that the sign language scenes we remembered were also just made up for the sake of the movie to make Indians look exotic and a little scary.

But the truth is that the various Indian tribes that once thrived in the Plains of North American actually did use signing for specific reasons when the need arose. Now if you know a Native American today and have learned very much about their culture, each tribe has a well developed and sophisticated language all their own. And because the tribes of the North American plains lived relatively far from each other, it makes sense that their “dialects” were so far different that communications between the tribes could be difficult.

Another fact we know about the majority of Native American tribes is that they didn’t very often stay in the same place year after year like we do now. They moved around to follow good hunting or to get away from bad weather, disease or other dangers to the tribe. And this nomadic behavior often brought different tribes in contact with each other. Contrary to what “the westerns” would have us believe, however, many times different tribes tried to work together and were not hostile as they tried to share important information that could be a big help to another tribe trying to get by in a sometimes hostile environment.

So in order to do some basic communications to get around the language barriers, a Native American sign language was developed so each tribe could speak to the other tribes when there was need for cooperation or negotiation. So when tribal leadership met to discuss territory issues or to learn from one another, this Native American sign language was about more than just saying hello. Being able to help one other was a vital way that all of the Native American tribes survived and prospered.

But historians and linguists have learned that the sign language used between tribes had many daily uses within tribal life as well. Many times Native Americans developed the sign language of the tribe so they could interact when the spoken word was not a good idea like when they were hunting or spying on enemies.

It’s fun and enlightening to look back at another people in another time and see how they used sign language to live better lives in harmony with other tribes where possible and to live peaceful and prosperous lives just as we do today.

And it’s helpful also to learn about other cultures because so often you will make a friend who is from that culture and knowing a little bit about their history makes you a more informed citizen and a better friend as well.

For anyone contemplating learning a second language, French can make a compelling case. Firstly, French has many similarities to English. For instance, many words are exactly the same in each language. This can give you an advantage when learning French. It will also help you improve your understanding of English.

French is spoken throughout the world and is an official language of many World Organizations like the United Nations. Being able to speak the language can help you in your private and professional life.

So if you want to study French, you want to learn it as efficiently as possible. The best part of learning a language is actually speaking to people. The learning of vocabulary and verb formations is tedious and dull. So what is the best way to learn French ? This article will cover this subject concentrating on the method that is quickest and best at teaching you to speak French.

I would say the best way to learn French is to do an immersion course. By immersion course I mean go to a country where French is spoken (France, Belgium, Switzerland or Canada for example) and do an intensive course. If possible stay on after the course has finished or if you are doing the course part time then try to get a job. This will help to build on the knowledge you received in the course.

Obviously you need a bit of time to do something like this. Maybe you could do it as part of a gap year between school and college. Or you could take a bit of time off work ” long service leave or a sabbatical. You should try to live in the country and even work there.

The more involved you get in the life of the country the faster your knowledge of the language will become. Living and working in the country will give you real life experiences that make the language and the words stick in your head.

So why is immersion learning so effective ?

I think there are two reasons. The first being that you have to talk French. Nobody will speak your language so this focuses your mind on learning and speaking the language. You can’t be concerned with sounding silly or even being initially misunderstood. All the trivial excuses you might make if you where learning the language in your native land fall away.

The second reason is that your learning seems so much more real. You can use your learning immediately rather than filing it away for a vacation in a few years time. The sights and sounds make it so much more real and this makes it easier to understand things that may be vague if you learned then in a book.

Immersing yourself in French is the best way to learn French but is also potentially expensive. It may also be hard to organize unless you have some time on your hands. Other ways to learn French if you do not have the finances or time to go to another country are to do a night course or even a self study course.
