Hip hop isn’t dead
People thought rap music was just a fad. Than with it still stuck around, people started paying a little more attention. This is when people started realizing that their is more to rap music than just a beat and some angry black guy screaming his lungs off. People started paying attention and more so to the lyrics. This is when grandmaster flash, Rakim and all the real old school guys started coming into the scene.
This ’struggle’ gave birth to groups like N.W.A and Bodycount who later the media started calling ‘gangster rappers’. They tried to stop gangsta rap but as I mentioned in my other articles, music can’t be stopped. It spread like wildfire in the American youth and surprisingly in the ‘white’ suburbs and soon became the thing for all kids in the U.S.A. You didn’t have to be black to relate to the oppression going on in the ghettos because the struggle was painted so perfectly with words in most of these songs that everyone could feel it.
Soon rap became a force to reckon with. With guys like LL Cool J bringing it to the mainstream with full force and building an almost New Kids On the Block like fan base. Yes rap music was not just a fad anymore, but it was a full fledged music genre. It seemed like rap music was reaching it’s tipping point but than came in two rappers that have effected and helped this genre more in their deaths than while being alive.
They took over the USA while they were alive but in death they took over the entire globe. The names I’m obviously talking about are 2pac and Biggie. 2pac was from the west coast, Biggie from the east, and both were dubbed ‘gangster rappers’ by the media. Not knowing, that label only made them cooler and more out there.
Regardless of what anyone says, I feel like rap music is just evolving. Hip hop is dead considering when it comes to the lyrics, but I won’t really say that. I think it’s evolving and their is going to be another artist or a few of them who are going to take hip hop to another level. This is my prediction and my promise.
