The Best Gas Mileage SUV in 2008
April 9, 2008 – 9:50 pmSUV fuel economy is a contradiction in terms; As a matter of fact, SUVs are known as the biggest gas guzzlers that the average American can buy. So when searching for the best gas mileage SUV rating, be prepared to discover that none will get good gas mileage; it’s just that some are less bad than others!
Vehicle size and luxury matters to you much more than efficiency, if you are in the market for a SUV. But certain SUV companies–such as Subaru–specifically market to hippies and other environmentally conscious folks. But even these Subarus are not known for being energy-efficient. In any case, if you are in the market for a new SUV, it’s smart to check out which ones get better gas mileage.
The SUV category is pretty flexible. Although they are supposed to be rugged vehicles equipped for off-road driving, the reality is much different. Many SUVs are simply status symbols for people who like to show off or drive something larger than other vehicles.
SUVs sit higher off the road and are heavier than most other vehicles, making them generally safer in crashes. However, SUV crashes often result in deadly rollovers, due to the higher center of gravity from having this higher stance off the road. That isn’t to say that SUVs are not safe; they are just not as safe as most people think.
Some people disagree on the definition of a SUV. A vehicle like the Saturn Outlook, for instance, might be considered a SUV to some, but others may disagree. Would a vehicle like this qualify for the best gas mileage SUV? I don’t know, but if a vehicle makes you feel as though you are in a SUV, then maybe that vehicle should be considered a true-blue SUV.
Finding out what the best gas mileage SUV may just make you reconsider ever buying one. You may even conclude that a hybrid car is your best choice after you run the numbers on your monthly fuel bill! After looking at numbers like a $500 dollar a month fuel bill, you may just change your mind about ever wanting a SUV.
If you don’t need much space for cargo or lots of passengers, why pay the extra money that a SUV costs? Because the investment in a hybrid car comes with the added benefit that you are helping America escape the middle east’s grip on our economy.
