How to go about repairing your Windows registry
April 19, 2008 – 5:45 amIf you suddenly start seeing Windows registry errors popping up on your computer, you might think it’s time to get the checkbook out and pay a lot of money for a professional repair. That’s not the case, however. In fact, you can actually repair your Windows registry very easily. Here are some repair options that don’t include calling in the pros.
*Do it yourself
If you know what you’re doing and have all the information you need, you can actually go into the Windows registry editor and fix it yourself. While this might be tempting, especially if you are fairly good at computers, it can also be a bad idea. Making changes to the Windows registry is as easy as making changes to a Word document: click save and your changes are done! This means if you change something you shouldn’t, you can very quickly and easily create more registry problems than you fix.
One of the most common ways that people try and make changes to their Windows registry is that when they get the pop up that describes the error it will generally tell you the name of the software that is giving you so many problems. They will then take the name of this program and go into the registry to try and locate what is causing the computer to malfunction in the registry.
To accomplish this goal, you must first know how to open the registry. It’s really a lot easier to do than you would think. First of all, you will need to go to the start menu in the lower left-hand corner, open up run, and type “regedit” in the dialogue box. Once you have done this it will engage the registry editor to allow you to make the necessary edits. However, you could find yourself in an even more problematic situation if you change the wrong registry item. Even if you fix the original problem you could still find that you changed the wrong thing in the process, and this could easily leave your Windows registry in worse shape than it was before.
*Call in a guru
Another option, of course, is to go in search of a relative or friend who is a self-proclaimed “computer expert.” Here, again, you have to be very careful because some of these experts aren’t really as knowledgeable about fixing the Windows registry as they let on. Plus, people are more likely to experiment on your computer instead of their own. If they cause you even more registry problems, they’re going to go home to their working computer and leave you stranded.
There are exceptions to this rule, for example, if you do know someone who works with computers as a programmer or IT guy and you trust them with your equipment, then it is probably not a bad idea to give them a call. They will probably have encountered this problem before and know the appropriate registry scanner and other repair software that you could use to fix your problem. It can often be overwhelming when you try to go in and look at all the different options to try and find an appropriate solution on your own, so don’t hesitate to call in an experienced friend to help you in this decision.
*Download a Windows registry scanner
This is really your best bet. In fact, a Windows registry scanner and repair tool is really the only way you’re going to find and repair every single registry problem your computer has. You simply can’t go through the entire registry, and even if you could, there’s no way to really tell what needs to be changed unless you know every detail about your computer.
It’s very easy to find a Windows registry program. You can search online using any search engine, or you can visit a webpage like ours that includes a listing of different registry tools and offers opinions on each.
