Great Ring - Solid Construction

Review Date: April 1, 2009
Reviewer: Robert, Texas
Recently purchased this ring. I decided to go with the off-brand due to price. I read reviews talking about the screw cap being plastic. Nothing on this ring is plastic. It's good solid construction. I've used it all day with my Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L telephoto lens. It held securely. Glad I made the purchase.
Good sturdy mount

I'll nitpick first: the paint doesn't match the paint of the Canon 70-200 f/4L. But who cares? Seriously, I wouldn't care if it were black.

Pros: it's a metal mount (most likely aluminum). It's sturdy, works very well. And comparing with the $140 for Canon collar, it's a deal.

Note: I have read a few other reviews saying that it's a hassle changing the orientation of the camera from horizontal to vertical. I found it to be quite easy. I just loosen the knob a bit and turn the camera (I did not have to unlatch the ring as others might have done). From what I read of the Canon collar, that's how that one works as well.

Lastly, I bought this when this was $45+, 2 weeks later, I found it was being sold for $29 on Amazon. For this price, getting the Canon collar over this one is just plain silly. If you have $100 to spare, I can use your $100.
A fantastic alternative to Canons price gouging on this

I have read many of the reviews and had mixed feelings about purchasing but could not bring myself to pay Canon that kind of money for a collar. Although I am very set on using only Canon lenses and bodies, I refuse to pay the huge markups on items such as lens hoods and collars. Once I received the Opteka mount, I was very surprised.

The construction was solid, the adjustment knob was solid and easy to use with no slipping and the interior was lined to prevent scratching. Suddenly I was feeling good about the purchase but had yet to marry it to the lens.

Life only got better when I attached it to the lens as it fit PERFECTLY. There was no rubbing or excess slack. It held the lens tightly. Then the moment of truth. I had heard that the ring would not allow you to rotate the lens without completely unscrewing it but I found and small turn of the knob allowed for a smooth rotation.

The only thing I saw that other reviews complained about was the color being off from the Canon L white. Although this is true, its not far enough off to make a big difference but for the price, I would have even accepted black as it does not impact performance.
Excellent value

I recently received this collar mount for my Canon 70-200L lens not really knowing what to expect based on some of the reviews. I couldn't be happier, this mount is all steel, well constructed, fits the L lens perfect and the color match is almost perfect. I can only image that anyone who complains about the color must be looking for a fashion statement over function. One half turn of the Clamp screw knob and the camera and lens turns to any position smoothly and effortlessly in the felt liner. Excellent value!!Opteka Tripod Collar Mount for the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM, EF 300mm f/4L USM, & EF 400mm f/5.6L USM SLR Lenses

Works great. Nice design since you can add or remove the collar without having to remove the lens from the camera body.

Just arrived. Put on 70-200mm f/4 f IS. Fits nice. Built nice. Everything is good. A little off color, but who cares if it works? Sturdy built. No problem with putting it on or rotating. Screw is rubber coated, but looks nice. If I have problems later on will report it.
Not as pretty, perfectly functional

The Opteka tripod collar arrived exactly as shown. As far as I can tell it is a perfect fit. The color is slightly darker if anyone cares. Not sure if they meant to have it this way but it looks as though the paint sprayer spit while it was being coated. Again, who cares. The main thing is it functions well and is $100 less than the Canon model. Highly recommended.

I always wanted a collar for my 70-200 F4/L but could never bring myself to pay nearly $200 for one. When I saw this one for $30 I almost though it was too good to be true. But I took a chance and ordered it. I am so glad I did. It is solid metal and well constructed with paint that matches perfectly to my lens. I highly recommend this to anyone needing a tripod mount for the Canon 70-200 f4/L.
A decent product for the price

perfect! Matches the color of the f/4 IS and fits perfectly. Inside lining is not quite as plush as Canon OEM but really who care?. Not going to scratch the lens or body of the lens
Great mount for a lot less than the OEM version

I was a little hesitant to purchase the Opteka after reading several of the reviews, but after thinking about it I decided for the price it was worth trying it. I am glad I did. The mount I received is as pictured at Amazon and was in good condition when received. Some people complained about the felt peeling, but my mount had the felt secure and properly placed. The mount fit my lens and held it securely and does not damage or scratch the lens when rotating the lens in the Opteka. As some other people have noted the color is slightly darker than the Canon lens but frankly I don't mind as I saved so much. I definitely think the Canon version is way over priced and for anyone wanting to get a great deal go buy the Opteka.
it do what you want

Why paing about USD 150 instead of USD 20, it does what I bought it for very nice, I put in my Canon 70-200 F4 and it looks nice, may be the color is not exactally like the lens, but who cares.

I used it to photograph the moon a few nights ago. No complaints.

Holds the camera / lens very well.

The paint is as described. I couldn't care less if it were matte black.

It is made out of metal, and costs around $20.

5/5

Opteka Tripod Collar Mount

Review Date: November 15, 2008
Reviewer: wid74,
The Collar arrived when promised.

The unit seems to be well constructed, mounted fine on my tripod, and firmly held my Canon 30D camera & Canon EF 70-200 lens. The camera and lens seemed to be pretty well balanced.

The one complaint I have with the collar is that to change camera orientation, i.e. rotate from horizontal to vertical, I have to unscrew the collar screw, pull the collar open a little, rotate the camera/lens, reset & tighten the screw. Reviews I have read of the Canon manufactured unit indicate one need only loosen the collar screw a little to rotate the lens/camera.

Opteka tripod collar - money saving alternative to Canon!

As a Canon shooter, I like to keep my gear as "Canon" as possible. I bought a Canon 70-200mm L lens a while ago & found I needed the tripod mount. I just couldn't see spending over $100 for the Canon brand when I could buy the Opteka for around $50! C'mon, it's a metal ring that holds the lens not optical equipment! The Opteka works well, the quality is fine & it fits the lens perfectly. The color is slightly darker than the lens but big deal, my concern is image quality, not "looking cool" and besides, I saved over $100!

I bought this collar to use with my EF 70-200 f/4L lens. Very disappointing that this never came with the lens as standard, and the retail price of the Canon version i think is highway robbery.

However, the Opteka feels very solid, and fits the Canon lens snuggly. It has a lining on the inside to give very good grip. Unfortunately the lining lifted at the bracket ends after using the first time. Think it's a good deal though, given the price of the OEM piece.

I was concerned about buying a non-Canon product, but the price on this was too good compared to Canon prices. No use issues, it looks and acts like it was made by Canon for Canon lenses. Can't vouch for long term reliability, but the collar fits tightly and works very well.

Given that the Canon version of this costs $100 more, i am quite happy with with this collar mount. Mine did come with a rubber grip on the knob and color is slightly off the the color of my 70-22 F4L but again, it was worth saving the $100 for.
Good value vs. the Canon-made collar

The collar I received (March 2010) was exactly as pictured - knurled white metal knob; similar color to Canon L series telephotos. The black felt inside the collar was not firmly glued on but I could get it to adhere by pressing it. It's held on by double sided tape and it wouldn't be hard to replace the tape or the felt, for that matter. It holds my 5D Mark II and 70-200mm f/4 lens in good balance for mounting on a tripod. It takes just a slight losening of the knob to rotate the camera & lens. There's no marking on the collar that matches it to a perfect horizontal or vertical orientation but a piece of color tape will fix that. The color match with the lens isn't perfect but its not too far off and after all, it's not a fashion article, it's a piece of work gear. Construction quality is adequate, it's functional and the value is high vs. Canon's own version.
Opteka Tripod Collar Mount

Review Date: August 13, 2009
Reviewer: W. Sheldon,
I ordered the Opteka Tripod Collar Mount for the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM to use on the IS version of this lens. As other reviewers noted, the mount is solid cast aluminum and finished with an off-white enamel paint that doesn't quite match the color of the Canon L lens. The mount does fit the lens snugly and seems sturdy, but the item I received differs quite a bit from the one pictured on Amazon.com. Unlike the product photo, the thumb screw is attached to an extension of the upper part of the ring and mates with threads in the base rather than staying stationary in the base when the mount is opened up. The moving part of the ring is therefore much larger than pictured, and the mount clamps very differently than the Canon version. Also, the thumbscrew on mine is covered with an ill-fitting piece of rubber, and is not captive (held in place) so it can easily fall off when the collar is opened up.

The quality of the mount is about what you would expect for the price. Not bad, but not great. I decided to return it because the velvet-like material used to protect the lens is very thin and poorly glued to the mount. It was peeling off in several places right out of the package, particularly near the hinge. Also, the hinge section is not offset from the inner surface of the mount so the metal touches the lens barrel during mounting and already made a small scratch on my lens barrel. I was concerned that use of this mount would mar my lens over time and lower the resale value. Grease from the thumbscrew also got onto the bottom of the lens in several places, and the screw threads in the base seemed soft and easy to strip out with frequent use.

I hate to pay 5 times as much for the Canon OEM tripod mount, but hopefully I can find one used or locate another third-party mount of higher quality.

The product is not in the same color like the promoted EF 70-200mm. It also seems like a cheap mount which barely fits to the lens as well as the thread. The inner soft cover to prevent scratches on the lens is not for everlasting and is already removing after 5 times using the mount.
Anyway, in the end it seems like this is the most useful compromise between the cheaper plastic mount and the very expensive original canon mount. For private/few use OK but not for heavy use.
cosmetics poor, but works OK, good for the $

Reviewer: Peanut,
I could not justify over $100 for the Canon tripod ring.
So I gave this a try.
The color is a bit off from the Canon white, but not bad.
The inner felt is not well attached. Likely I will have to replace this with use.
The paint finish has lots of bumps, almost like a texture.
Clearly different from the Canon finish.
I have 3 Canon L lenses to compare with and two with tripod mounts.
But functionally, it seems to work OK.
Holds the lens securely.
For 1/4 the price of the Canon it seems to work just fine.
Just don't expect a $100 finish.
Good enough subtitute.

Having owned a 300 mm Nikkor/FM combo, I knew what the balance issues would be in using my 40D and my new 70-200 f4 IS zoom lens. Somewhat miffed that on a $1200+ lens the collar mount was $150 extra, I looked into Opteka's version.
I have used it and I will say it is satisfactory for the amount of use it will get (a few times a month). While not using a collar is certainly possible, it is very uncomfortable and very hard to set the frame precisely. With the collar, the camera balances well and the set up is without problems.
The quality is of course not the same as OEM. The metal, the paint (which does not match as it is slightly darker), the rubber are much cheaper materials. In use, I found it very difficult to rotate the lens in the collar so I just leave it in one position at this time.
I would recommend this to those who need or want to save some money.

This product seems to be well-designed and constructed, even the finish seems very close to that of my Canon, but the one I ordered came with a non-standard, miniature-size threaded tripod socket. I can use either of my Joby GP2-D1EN Gorillapod Flexible Tripod for Digital SLR Cameras with Bubble Level tripods with it, but not my Manfrotto 679B Monopod 3-Section Replaces 679 (Black) or beloved 35-year-old Gitzo G1505 Tele Studex Mk2 Compact Tripod without Column tripod. I am sending this one back. I suppose I will spring for the Canon tripod ring.

I purchased this to use on the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras I recently purchased as an alternative lens to the 2.8 version which I already own and use.
Not what I expected

I can't agree with the other reviewers about the quality of this product. Lets start by saying that I received a generic item packed in a box with no markings. No where on the product does it say that it is made by Opteka. Paint is of a matte finish and a different hue from the traditional Canon L lens paint. The screw has a rubber ribbed grip instead of the machined ridges as the canon would have. It would certainly serve its purpose as a tripod lens ring but absolutely not worth the price being asked for. The product picture is completely deceiving. It feels more like the cheap photographic items sold on the famous auction site. Of course the original Canon tripod ring is about three times more expensive (and outrageously overpriced) but for what you get when buying this ring; I would say the same applies here.
You get what you pay for

Ok, so it fits on my 70-200 F4L and it works but...

Poor construction quality
The hinge is poorly aligned, making the lock screw goes into the hole diagonally (yikes)
Paint not smooth/polished

I might return the item.
