How Many Poker Chips Do You Need?
April 18, 2008 – 2:26 amAny number of poker chips can be purchased. Usually they start at 300, but you can buy as many as 1000. It just depends how many you will be wanting.
The number of people who join your poker game will determine the amount of chips you need. Of course aggressive players will require more chips than quiet, tight fisted ones. So the type of players you have will also determine the amount of chips you will need.
It can be assumed that 300 chips will service 3-4 players, but this is not really so. This number of chips will only be good enough to replace damaged or worn chips. This is because for a good poker game you do not really want to play with such a small group of people.
Practically speaking you should get 500 chips minimum and for a good sized poker game of 9 or more people you would should require 1000 to 1500 poker chips. This will allow for aggressive players and you can still have a few left over. Added to this is the fact that you will not have such heavy use on your chips and they will last longer.
In addition, make sure that only about 30% to 40% of your chips are in high denominations. Most of your betting will be done with your low to middle range chips so keep that in mind when you’re looking for a set. A 1000 chip poker set is no good if there’s 200 white chips, 200 red chips, 200 blue chips, 200 green chips, and 200 black chips. You need to have more chips in the lower range. I know it seems like common sense, but you’d be surprised how often common sense is ignored.
In short, the number of poker chips you need is determined by the number of people in your average home game and by the overall aggression level of your games. You want to make sure you have enough chips for people to buy in heavy if they want. You also need a proper range of chips so you don’t run out of the lower denominations. A good rule of thumb is to start at 500 chips then add 100 to 150 chips per person for every person you have over five.
