Poker players have a language all of their own. When a novice sits down to a poker table with other players who have been playing for a long time, that novice might get confused about what is happening. This confusion stems from a string of words that possibly make no sense at all.

From the beginning of a game to the end, the players’ speech will need to be analyzed. At the beginning of the game, the players all ante. This is where they place an initial, low bet to create the pot, which is the amount of money the winner receives.

In some forms of poker, a small blind and a big blind are used. These are the forced bets for the two people who are sitting to the left of the dealer. All other antes are to be equal to the big blind and are voluntary if the player decides his hand is good enough to win.

In community types of poker, some of the playing cards are used by all the players and are set in the middle of the table. The players use these cards and their two hole cards, the two faced down cards that they were dealt first, to make a winning hand. A hand is five cards that make a predetermined winning set, such as two pair or a flush.

The community cards are placed on the table and called the window cards. The first three cards dealt face up are called the flop. The next two cards are called the turn and the river respectively.

After the blind bets are made and the two hole cards are dealt, the player then must either bet or fold. To fold, the player hands their cards to the dealer and awaits another round. The player folds if they feel their initial two cards are not good enough to create a winning hand.

The first bet, or the small blind is made by the player to the left of the dealer. After the first round, a dealer button is given to each player in turn going clockwise from the left of the dealer. The dealer button shows whose turn it is to bet first.

The dealer puts the flop into the window once the remaining players have anted. Based upon what is in their hole and the flop, the players will bet again. The person with the dealer button starts the betting if they feel the five cards showing will give them a win.

The remaining players must call, raise or fold. When a player calls, he is simply betting the same amount as the original bettor just to stay in the game. When a player raises a bet, he is adding more to the original bettor?s amount.

Once all the window cards are down, the flop, the turn and the river, the last of the betting occurs. If there is more than one player still playing a showdown happens. This is when the remaining players show their hole cards to reveal what hand they have.

The person with the higher-ranking hand wins. The ranking of poker is a high card, a pair, two pairs, three of a kind, a flush, a straight, a full house, four of a kind and a straight flush respectively. The winner with the highest-ranking hand wins the pot and the game begins again.
