We have mass production to thank for making the products we need available to use when we need them and generally where we need them. Mass production also makes many of those same products affordable. But mass production simply cannot match the quality you get when you buy things that are handmade. And quality is one reason antiques are getting more popular.

You’ll find antiques just look better, and certainly antique picture frames are like this. You can show off those old photos or pieces of art in any frame, but use an antique frame and you will immediately notice a difference far and above any mass produced frame. You’ll be drawing attention to them, and just making them look more impressive.

If you have a photo in a store bought frame it probably looks pretty nice, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But move that picture to an antique frame and it will take on a whole new aura. It’s not something that is easily explained, but it is easily noticed.

Think about this. You have a very old photograph of your great grandmother as a child. Now imagine that same picture in a frame that she owned. It would certainly give that photo extra meaning.

Perhaps that frame is not available to you. No problem. Try displaying it in a frame made around the same time the picture was taken. Now you don’t just have a picture with a border around it, you have something more. The picture and frame will look like they belong together, and they do. People will notice. You’re guests will comment. Everybody’s eyes will be drawn to it.

Now let’s talk for a second about quality. Sure there are frames made today that are handmade and of tremendous quality. I’m hardly one of those people who think everything “back in the day” was made better. But with antique frames you know you are getting something made with pride and quality.

Everything was handcrafted then. And a true artist could provide spectacular detailing. Look closely and you’ll see it. Like we said, there are still frame makers today that can provide great quality, but as we mentioned, quality is not the only reason to go with an antique. It’s just one of many.

But as with everything else, there’s a catch. And in this case, the catch is generally the price. Some people think they probably can’t afford a true antique. And the fact is, that these frames can be quite costly. More than once I’ve gone into an antique store and almost fainted when I turned over the price tag. And that hold true whether you are looking at a wood frame, or one made of silver or gold.

But before you break out the credit card and go into debt, realize that there are other options. You absolutely need to shop around, both at home and online. With a little persistence, you’ll be able to get the frame you want at a price that’s more to your liking. And your budget.

And when you do, buy it and put that cherished photo or artwork inside it and proudly display it. You’ll notice a difference right away.

And you won’t be alone. Family members and guests will also be sure to notice and comment.

Antiques are usually quite profitable in collecting, but the antique clock business in particular is especially profitable. Anything from the grandfather clock to a German made mantel clock can fetch high bid prices at auction. But caring for the antique clock in question is another story entirely.

Antique clock care advice can be hard to give, as there are so many different types of antique clocks. The general types of clocks are commonly classified as mantle clocks, mechanical clocks, grandfather clocks, and pendulum clocks. The first generalized tip to keep in mind is that most of these clocks will work off pulleys and gears- meaning winding the clock every so often may be required in keeping it in working condition.

The most frightening and dangerous times a clock can go through involve moving or position the clock. In the case of the antique pendulum clock, the pendulum can rock back and forth, causing damage to the insides of the clock. Grandfather clocks will often require multiple people to carry it- and any belts, buckles, or jewelry can easily chip paint, mar wood, and crack glass. Thus, moving a clock must be well planned out beforehand.

As far as cleaning a clock goes, one should always wear proper gloves and use fine tissues or cloth when dusting the clock in question. This will ensure that any metal pieces will not become corroded from exposure to sweat or grime found on one’s hands. Certain types of cloths may scratch some types of surfaces, so it’s usually best to use fine stitched cloths that are approved for particular situations.

Just as odd as it may be to ruin a metal clock by simply touching it, housing any type of clock in regards to humidity can be dangerous. High humidity levels will make metal clocks rust and corrode- even wooden clocks that may have metal inner workings. But wood isn’t devoid of problems either- as low humidity levels will dry out the wood and degrade the overall health of the clock frame.

Just as important as it is to make sure that every step is taken in providing proper care for a clock, it is equally as important as ensuring that accidents don’t happen. If they do, an antique clock owner could be out of a lot of potential money. To protect against theft and accidents clock owners should consult their insurance agencies in regards to any insurance they may have available for collectibles and valuables.

Final Thoughts

Antique clocks can be rather hard to maintain to the average consumer, but following the aforementioned tips will keep consumers and their clocks in great condition. Always be wary of using any types of chemical or cleaning solvents when cleaning a clock. When in doubt, it’s usually best just to use a fine cloth without any type of cleaning solvent at all. Lastly, taking into effect any humidity issues and the prospect of obtaining insurance will ensure that consumers get the most out of their antique clock experience.

Investors, collectors, and coin lovers should all be familiar with the commemorative coin. These types of coin celebrate a certain, event, time period, or other occasion worthy of noting. But to reap the maximum benefit of purchasing such coins, investors and collectors should note key factors in commemorative coin design.

Legal tender is anything that can be legally used to buy a product or service. Many commemorative coins will not be legal tender, since they are rather best suited for display and collecting. But there are instances in which some types of commemorative coins can be used as legal tender, although investors should not do so as most commemorative coins have lower face value than actual worth.

Other types of coins, in particular the types that are allowed for circulation, are another type of commemorative coin altogether. This is best seen with the issue of the United States Quarters that have been produced as a means of bringing attention to the different states that make up the United States. These commemorative coins can have investment value, but generally are best suited for legal tender until they become uncirculated.

The reason commemorative coins are so important to investors is due to the fact that the non circulated types will be laden with precious metals. Gold or silver is common in commemorative coins, and makes for a better return on investment should the collector ever choose to sell the coin. Prices of precious metals in recent decades have continued to rise, which proves that the market of investing in commemorative coins is a sure win for smart investors.

Governments will usually mint commemorative coins for extra cash flow to better run a nation. because governments will need to make a profit, most investors will not see a short term return on investment. Rather, it could take several years for the investment to pay off, depending on the situation and circulation of the coin. But this is nothing new to collectors, who are well aware that only through time do most coins raise in value.

It’s nice to have a commemorative coins lying around, even if the average consumer doesn’t collect coins as a hobby. After all, time and history shows that the general price of gold and silver has increased over the decades. In that sense, obtaining commemorative coins can be seen as an investment that will pay off more and more each day a coin is maintained in great condition.

In Conclusion

Collectors and investors alike are flocking to commemorative coins for a simple reason- they’re great to have around both as an investment and as a decorative item. They make for great conversations, remembrance of history, and serves as a means to help one’s own country through patriotism. Obtaining a commemorative coin is usually as easy as searching the Internet for leads, although contacting local government officials can also supply more information on the subject.

As in a lot areas of collecting antiques, antique books is a big field. For collectors, it may be as narrow or as general as you’d like it to be. You might decide to collect a specific genre such as nonfiction or a particular period of history. You may collect a certain year or a particular author. Books about a specific geographical area might even be what you decide to collect.

When you determine what types of books you’re interested in collecting, you should become familiar with the myriad of factors that can affect the cost of a given book. The most important of these factors is demand. As with other collectible items and antiques, the true value is what somebody else is amenable to pay for it. If a book is in high demand, other collectors will be willing to pay a steeper price to get it. The more scarce a particular book is, the greater the demand for that book is liable to be. It is also essential to remember that demand can vary. The value of a different book may increase or decrease over time as demand for the book varies.

One element that greatly affects demand is the availability of existing copies of a book. If there are limited numbers of books on the market, the demand, and the price of the book will increase. If more copies of the book go up for sale, the price for a book is likely to fall. For this reason, limited edition and first edition copies of books are typically more valuable than later printings of the book.

Another thing that can affect the price of a book is the overall condition of the book. Books can be easily damaged if they are not handled with care. This becomes increasingly true as a book ages. Over time pages become more brittle and the threads in the binding become weaker. The older a book is, the more care must be taken when handling it.

When thinking about an investment in an antique book, make certain to consult a reputable dealer. Someone who is experienced and knows the business is a great deal more apt to be able to attest to the authenticity of the book in question. It is also less likely that they will carry repaired or damaged books in their collections.

When you have decided on a book that you would like to purchase you should shop around to make sure you are getting a good price. The price of a book is likely to be different depending on what dealer you go to, and that price difference may be significant, so a little homework could save you a considerable amount of money.

When you have decided on your antique book, make certain you make the effort to carefully analyze the condition. Look for broken or damaged bindings and stains on the cover, as well as torn or missing pages. You must also check the title page to make certain that the book was labeled properly, and that a book that is being marketed as a first edition is in actuality, a first edition.

Finding the book you want in the desired condition can take time. Be patient. Don’t rush into a purchase just because a book is available. Take the time to make sure it is a book worth investing in.

Have you observed the quantity of antique shops there are in your city? There is an explanation for that. There is a huge demand for antiques. As ever more people observe the craftsmanship and quality of older pieces of furniture they are making the decision to invest in these pieces.

It may be a bit overwhelming for the beginning collector to get started. There are many different styles, eras, and designs to choose from, so it is often hard to decide where to begin. Typically you should begin with what is appealing to you.

Unlike collecting figurines or stamps which are often hidden away on shelves or in albums, antique furniture frequently occupies a prominent place in collector’s homes. So, one of the best pieces of advice on what to collect is to collect what you fancy. As these pieces will be displayed in your home they should be something that is not out of place there and that you enjoy owning. If you don’t like having it in your home then you are unlikely to appreciate it regardless of its value as a potential investment.

There are a lot of elements that bear on the value and price of an antique furniture object. One of the primary considerations is the piece’s age which generally has the biggest consequence on the value of the object. As a general formula: the older it is, the more priceless it is.

The collector needs to also assess the condition of the antique. Two tables of similar age and style could command very different prices if one of them has visible scratches on it, for instance. Check closely for evidence of repairs, dents, gouges, and cracks as these factors will all affect the value of the piece.

It is also a good idea to consider the type of wood used to construct the furniture. Items made from hardwoods such as teak and mahogany typically are worth far more than ones made from softwoods such as pine or poplar. Further, hardwoods hold up better over the years and are richer in color and have a more desirable graining to collectors. Be aware of any treatments, waxes, or polishes which have been applied to the furniture as these can also decrease the value.

If you’d care to begin collecting now it is generally best to start with more modest, less pricey pieces then any miscues are less expensive. As your knowledge grows around antique furniture you might then add a few objects which are bigger and more costly.
