There are many civilians that one and use military surplus vehicles. The main reasins for this are that they are very reliable and durable, but also easy and cheap to repair.

There are many who own Army Surplus Jeeps from the Vietnam War. They are easy to maintain and service and with a few tools can be kept running for many years to come.

We had one of the Army Jeeps when I was a kid. It had been worked hard and was in need of much repair. There were many examples like this one that hadn’t actualy been in combat.

I think the one we had had been used for training. It had been out through it’s paces and had probably been driven over rocks and really rough terrain. The floor pan had large holes in it, and the one wheel was ruined. For this reason it was dirt cheap, which meant money could be spent on repairs.

Nowadays, it can be hard to find parts for these old and aging army surplus vehicles. Back then, however, it was pretty simple. Army outdoor surplus gear - no matter if it was a Jeep or a sweater - was affordable, practical, and well built.

Back then we searched around the local Army surplus store to find the different parts we needed. It took a few months, but eventually we had collected them all together.

Nowadays, the Hummer is the main vehicle that the army uses. It replaced the Jeep which was much easier to work on and because of it’s small dimensions, would fit in the garage with no problems. This wouldn’t be the case for a Hummer.

We spent most of the summer working on it, and just as we went into fall we had it running. It still needed some cosmetic work, but mechanically it was sound. We took it for a drive and it ran superbly and to it’s credit, is still on the road to this day.
