Craigs list and New York

Craigslist is a combined network of online services which features several classified advertisements like housing, personals, jobs, internships and certain specific services like community, gigs, pets categories, wanted/ sale/ barter/ services. Forums on different topics are also advertised. Craigs list and New York are inseparable today with this service being used by almost everybody.

Even though Craigslist is operating in such a big way it has only 24 employees. The income is generated by the paid ads in some special cities and broker apartment listings in New York as seen in Craiglist and New York. Craigslist is a leading classified service amongst all mediums. It has viewership of about thirty million.

During the year 2007 24 staff members were associated with the operations. Revenue to Craigslist is from the advertisements published in the cities. Some of the advertisement rates are $75 per single ads in San Francisco and $ 25 per single Ads in the cities of Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Washington and New York. Recently paid broker apartment listings are also made available in the City of New York at the rate of $ 10 per advertisement.

Craigslist was started by it’s founder Craig Newmark to help cover local happenings on the same lines as the Well and Usenet which were helping people to come together to help each other in a friendly way over the internet. Craigslist is a non profit making business which aims at helping new nonprofit leaders to come up, get recognized, gain popularity, develop skills to get long lasting success and get connected with people in the same line of business.

Craigslist and New York receives over 30 million classifieds advertisements each month and this makes it a leading classified service network. The categories of the advertisements range from personal advertisements and announcements to job listings, buying and selling, to varied other subjects. What makes the Craigslist one of the leading job boards is that it receives around 2 million job listings.

People soon started using this site to put up non-event postings because they found it easier to get in touch with people with skills they were looking for, and a separate category called “Jobs” was put up.

The postings and contributions grew in number with an increase of subscribers which became popular by word of mouth. The list of categories grew with the demand of the users. “Jobs” category was created when it was found that employers used the listing which provided technically skilled candidates to them.

Suddenly there was a steep increase in the number of postings and subscribers. People started to use the mailing lists that were certainly non - eventful and discovered that the technical positions which proved to be vacant can be filled up easily. This finally led to the addition of job category. The constant demand for many categories indirectly led to the increase in number of categories.

Most often the members may not know each other in real life and this listing provides privacy and trust. According to Newmark these features are the ones that make the listing so popular. It is well established and its popularity is because it is consistent in its customer service and simplicity. Craigslist also does not promote or support individual organizations but is a non profit organization working towards providing resources, online information and supporting the society as a whole.
