“A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children.” – Audubon

We can define conservation as managing natural resources in a planned manner. We can’t say that conservation is only about economics, there is a lot more to it than that. It also includes passing the beautiful nature to the coming generation and also about preserving the lives of creatures that would become extinct if care is not taken to protect them.

It is a well-known fact that for our survival we all need to have a balance among all living things. The extinction of any species due to reasons like mismanagement of land or wildlife resources leads to a domino effect. The ecologists believe that this even leads to the food chains getting interrupted. Not only that, the water and the soil also suffers in the bargain. Even the forests become less and less in number. In 1864 two famous books were published that made Americans aware of the meaning of conservation and its importance. These books were: ‘Walden’ written by Henry David Thoreau, highlighting the values of nature and how it can nourish a man’s spirits. The second one was ‘ Man And Nature’ by George Perkins Marsh telling about damages that were being caused to the environment by humans.

Almost 40 years later, Teddy Roosevelt’s passion about conservation advanced the cause even further. It was during his term that the U.S. National Park System was enlarged and the U.S. Forest Service established. Another influential figure in conservation at that time was John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club. He accompanied Roosevelt on a trip to Yosemite in 1903 – a trip that helped convince Roosevelt of the need to protect lands like this through federal control and management.

Conservation is not the only problem faced by the country. More than three-fourth of the world’s species live in other so-called protected areas. Even these areas have also not survived the ill effects of development and mismanagement. The renowned conservationist Dr. Kenton Miller suggests that one of the most efficient ways to improve survival in these areas is by making more park rangers. He also says that park rangers play very important role in the future of our ecosystem services and our heritage. These park rangers are helpful because they work together with scientists, visitors and the local community members too.

There has been a shortage of park rangers all through the world. To resolve this problem to some extent, the organization Adopt A Ranger, helps in financing the salaries of park rangers. The park rangers are required for management of nature reserves, national parks and protected areas. This organization provides funds to such rangers because they believe that this shortage is responsible for around 75% of the world from protecting nature. There are some other organizations like this one that work towards increasing awareness in general crowd and support form many countries all over the world.

Thanks to the influence of early pioneers like John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt in protecting natural resources in America, and the work of organizations like the Sierra Club and the National Audubon Society, public awareness has grown to the point that now hundreds of young people each year choose to enter this important career field. There are a number of career options students can choose from, including park ranger, wildlife handler, horticultural aide, forestry technician, conservation educator, marine life aquarium worker, zoological society specialist, and museum specialist.
